A very successful special interest group tour
In November 2018 twenty of us toured Vietnam and Cambodia on a 16day farm & horticulture tour holiday. As a tour organizer, I feel a lot of pressure to ensure our tour members have an outstanding experience, and I was very pleased that our trip was a resounding success.

Our experiences included a number of typical tourist activities, including a two day cruise in Ha Long Bay. We also visited a number of farms, flower villages and greenhouse operations. We visited Hanoi, Hue, Hoi An, Da Lat and Ho Chi Minh City, then traveled onward to Siem Reap, a tour extension also organized by Tony.

Tony, our guide throughout the tour, and my main contact in organizing the itinerary, was well qualified on the technical side, answering our questions regarding Vietnamese agriculture/horticulture with good knowledge and insight. He was also a very attentive tour guide, very concerned about ensuring our group's complete satisfaction, safety and overall happiness. He knows his stuff.

Our tours are generally 4-5 star in nature, and we have high expectations for excellence throughout. It did take a bit of back and forth to get on the same wavelength, as the original proposal we received included restaurants, Ha Long cruise ship and hotels that were not at the level we look for. The final result however was all we could have wanted. Our participants were thoroughly happy with the hotels, meals, transportation and overall experience.

I also requested a few 'special' undocumented extra experiences to surprise and delight our group. Tony suggested two experiences that were genuine hits with our group. One was a 3 hour open top jeep tour through Hanoi. The second was a 90 minute group massage. Yup, all 20 of us at the same time, in multiple rooms in a multi-story massage emporium. Great Fun!

Vietnam was a great country to visit. Friendly locals (though not afraid to take advantage of unwary shoppers), great food, very inexpensive five star hotels, and many unique experiences. I would recommend Deluxe Vietnam Tours as a tour organizer and would be happy to provide additional feedback to any other group tour organizer.

Today is a day to gain a real appreciation for Vietnamese food. After breakfast, you’ll head off to a village near Hanoi where you’ll see local vegetable farming, local life and culture. To really get into the culture, you’ll learn to cook some typical dishes with a local family. You willl also visit the Tay Tuu flower village. This afternoon, you will enjoy a walking tour of Hanoi to experience its vibrant street food scene. Our food expert will give you an insight into the intricacies, traditions, history and ingredients of some of the most popular dishes of Hanoi and North Vietnam. You will get to experience wonderful food and flavours that you would never find, nor perhaps dare to try, without being guided by a local. This excursion will include a visit to the wet market, where locals purchase the ingredients for their daily meals. You’ll finish off learning how to make egg coffee…not something that sounds too exciting, but I’m told that you won’t be able to keep our friends from asking you for this when you get back home. But, if egg coffee is not your style, Hanoi draft beer awaits.

Day 6: Hanoi City - Fly to Hue

Today will be a busy day, as we visit historic Hanoi before departing for our flight to Hue. Hanoi is rated as one of Asia’s ten best cities by T&L magazine, and by the time you leave, you’ll have really been able to discover why. Our day will include a visit to the ‘Hanoi Hilton’, as the notorious Hoa Lo prison was called by American troops during the war. First though, you’ll visit the Ho Chi Minh mausoleum, the Presidential Palace with its French Colony architectural charm and some beautiful pagodas. You’ll visit the Temple of Literature, which began as Vietnam’s oldest university in 1076, before the French closed it in 1919. After that, you’ll see the highly rated Museum of Ethnology to learn about some of the 53 ethnic minority communities in Vietnam. We’ll end our time in Hanoi with a visit to the Old Quarter. The method in which you will experience this thriving, bustling, chaotic mix of vehicles, vendors and sights will not soon be forgotten. Then we are off to the airport for our flight to Hue, approximately one hour. On arrival at our palace Hotel, we’ll check in and enjoy dinner.

You will depart our hotel after breakfast for our scenic drive to Hoian. We’ll drive along a beautiful beach, then cross the Hai Van Pass with it’s magnificent views of the East Sea. After checking into our hotel, we will commence a walking tour of ancient Hoian, another World Heritage Site. Here you will be able to discover some of Vietnam’s leading horticultural enterprises. Our visits here will include a hydroponic greenhouse vegetable and fruit farm before we drive to Dalat city for lunch. In the afternoon, we will visit the hi-tech Cầu Đất farm. Saigon Today will be an exotic adventure in the Mekong Delta, as we’ll learn about traditional farming, culture and local enterprises of many kinds. We’ll leave at 8 am for our 2 hour ride to Tien Giang province, west of Saigon. There we’ll cross the Tien River by motorboat to see the fish market and floating fish farm. We’ll visit several villages and markets, visit farmers in their gardens, hear traditional music and folk songs, see orchids being grown, and taste local produce. Horse drawn travel will take us from a local market to the Vuon Dau restaurant, situated in a lush fruit garden, for lunch. After lunch, we’ll row slowly through small canals till we meet our motorboat for our final Mekong River cruise to the town of My Tho, where we’ll board our bus for our return to Saigon for our overnight.

After breakfast, a short drive will take us to the Cu Chi tunnels, just west of Saigon. Our excursion to, and then through, the Cu Chi tunnels will let us learn just how important these were during the war against the French and then later against the Americans. Used as a means of underground communication during these wars, they are credited with a large role in the defeat of the US. Your chance to go underground will give you a little taste of how Vietnamese fighters lived during the war. After lunch, we’ll drive back to Saigon for a city tour. We will visit the Notre Dame Cathedral, the historic Central Post Office, and the Reunification Palace. Following that we will also see the remarkable War Remnants Museum and Ben Thanh market. Saigon – fly to Siem Reap For anyone not traveling on to Siem Reap, you will make your way to the airport for homeward travel. For everyone else (hopefully everyone), we will have free time in Saigon until it is time for our trip to the airport, and then our flight (included in price) to Siem Reap. Upon arrival, we will be met by our tour guide and then transfer to our lovely hotel for check in. We’ll then continue on to visit the Roluos group, which includes three temples - Bakong, PrahKo and Lolei - dating from the late 9th century and corresponding to the ancient capital of Hariharalaya, from which the name of Lolei is derived. Remains include 3 well-preserved early temples that venerated the Hindu gods. The bas-reliefs are some of the earliest surviving examples of Khmer art. Modern-day villages surround the temples. Tonight enjoy buffet dinner with Khmer Traditional Dance Show. Overnight n Siem Reap.

Day 15: Angkor Wat Tour Cambodia

Siem Reap - Today our private guide and driver will take us on a full day of historical adventures, as we are whisked away to see the breathtaking architecture and natural setting of one of the most important archaeological sites in SouthEast Asia. The different sites of Angkor cover around 250 square miles, including the forested areas. It features ruins dating back to a period between the 9th and 15th century, all sculpted in the distinctive Khmer style. As you approach the park, you will first see the South Gate of Angkor Thom. A walk along a half a mile trail past the walls that lead to a hidden temple is optional, but our guide will definitely ensure that you see the amazing temple areas of Bayon and Baphoun, as well as the Terrace of Elephants and Leper King. Take a break and have lunch inside the park before you head over to the grey-stoned jungle temple of Ta Phrom. Here you enter a mysterious world, as tree stumps seem to grow out of the temple and roots crawl up its walls. For many people this is the highlight of Angkor. The most famous part of the park is, of course, Angkor Wat, known to visitors around the world. You’ll have no doubt at the end of this day why this is a World Heritage Site. Siem Reap After breakfast at our hotel, we board a boat on Tonle Sap Lake, the “Great Lake” of Cambodia, one of the largest in Asia. Here, we will enjoy a brief cruise past floating villages complete with schools, restaurants, and hospitals. If your energy level still permits, before returning back to our hotel, we’ll stop by at Artisan D’Angkor, home of handicraft center or Old Market, a lively outdoor market where you will find antiquities, silver and gold jewelry, gems, silk, Kramas, stone and wood carvings, as well as T-Shirts, CDs and other souvenirs. Lunch at local restaurant. Then transfer to airport for your departure flight to the next destination. And with that, we end our horticulture, history and adventure tour services. Our memories, on the other hand, will last us a lifetime.
